The Genesee River, which originates near Pennsylvania, flows North carrying water from the Genesee Valley though Rochester and into Lake Ontario. In the past it provided waterpower and transportation to a booming 19th century Rochester. Now it defines some of the major parks in the city, including the Genesee Valley Park and the downtown Genesee Crossroads Park.
